Did the story help? How to read the evaluation
VintageCam compares the ten minutes before and after a story. How it is measured, what the verdicts mean and where the limits are.
When the camera has read a story aloud, many parents wonder whether it did anything. VintageCam gives you a guide. It is based only on numbers the camera measures anyway: how loud it was in the room and how much the picture moved.
What is compared
The camera measures noise level and movement every 30 seconds. For the evaluation VintageCam looks at two windows: the ten minutes before the story starts and the ten minutes after it ends. In between, while the story plays, noise is not counted, because otherwise the camera would measure its own voice. For an evaluation to be possible the story must have played for at least two minutes. The result appears ten minutes after the end.
The possible verdicts
Clearly calmer than before means the share of calm readings afterwards was clearly higher. About as calm means nothing notable changed. Less calm than before means the opposite. If it was calm already and stayed calm, that is what it says. If there were no readings from before, for example because the camera was not running, VintageCam only shows that it was calm afterwards, without a comparison. And with too few readings the evaluation says explicitly that it cannot give a verdict. If you like, you also see after how many minutes it became calm.
What the numbers cannot do
A single result says little. Children also become calmer on their own without a story, and hunger, teething or a hot room play a part. Whether the story was the reason, VintageCam does not know. It only becomes meaningful over several evenings, which is why the list shows per story how often it was calmer afterwards once there are at least two runs. Only runs with a single story are counted, so playlists do not get mixed up. The evaluation is a guide, not a measuring device. VintageCam is not a medical device, makes no diagnosis and replaces neither medical advice nor supervision of your child.
How to get more meaningful results
Start the story at similar times and with the same volume. Let the camera measure the time before, most simply by already running the sleep analysis session beforehand. Do not change the evening ritual at the same time. And delete the evaluations when you no longer need them: there is a button for it, and they are removed after 180 days anyway. More about the stories is on the Stories page, and about the night score in Sleep calm explained.
