Sleep calm explained: what sleep analysis shows and what it does not

The sleep calm score sums up sound and movement over a night. How to read it correctly, and why it is not a medical measuring device.

The Complete plan of VintageCam includes a sleep analysis. For each night it shows a score called “sleep calm” and compares it with the nights before. That is helpful for spotting patterns, but only if you know what the number means and what it cannot do.

How the score comes about

During a session the camera evaluates two things: how loud it is in the room and how much the picture changes. From that comes a value showing how calm the time was overall. A night with long quiet stretches and few interruptions gives a high value, a night with frequent crying, rustling or movement a lower one. The session starts automatically, but you can also start and end it by hand with a button, for example for a nap.

What the comparison is good for

Single nights say little, because sleep varies: teething, an infection, a growth spurt or a hot summer evening change a lot. The score becomes interesting over time. Has sleep calm improved since the new bedtime routine? Are nights getting calmer or more restless since the move to his own room? When is the child usually most restless? Questions like these can be answered better with data than with a gut feeling after a short night.

What the number cannot do

Sleep calm measures sound and movement in the picture, not sleep itself. A child can lie awake quietly and then counts as calm; another may talk and move a lot in their sleep. The app does not detect breathing, pulse, sleep phases or even health conditions. It is therefore expressly not a medical device and replaces neither supervision nor the paediatrician's advice. If you are worried about breathing, fever or development, the child belongs in medical hands, not in an app.

Tips for meaningful values

Let the camera stand in the same place every night so the values stay comparable. Avoid background noise in the room such as air purifiers or ticking clocks that raise the level. And do not look at the number with suspicion every morning: watch weekly trends, not individual outliers.
