Phone alarm system: the honest limits
What a phone can and cannot do as an alarm system: switching off, airplane mode, Doze, GPS indoors and why VintageCam does not replace a burglar alarm.
Anyone selling a security product likes to talk about its strengths. We also want to talk about the weaknesses, because only those who know them can use the tool properly.
What a phone cannot prevent
Switching off, airplane mode, empty battery. If someone switches the phone off or into airplane mode, it is cut off from the network, and no app helps against that. In this case VintageCam reports “offline” after a short time and shows the last known position if the phone was armed. That is often the decisive clue, but it is not protection.
Forced termination. Android allows apps to be killed hard. If the alarm system runs as a visible service, that is not trivial but possible. That is why phone protection restarts by itself after a restart or abort, as far as Android allows.
Replacing a screen lock. If a thief has unlocked your phone or knows your PIN, protection mechanisms that rely on unlocking can be bypassed. That is why there is the setting “Allow disarming on the device”: if you switch it off, the system can only be disarmed in the viewer, not on the phone itself.
What causes inaccuracies
GPS in buildings. Indoors, positioning is inaccurate, often by tens of metres. A change-of-location alarm works better outdoors than in the flat. That is why the motion sensor exists as a trigger of its own.
Power-saving modes. A phone that lies still for a long time falls into a deep sleep and then accepts commands from the network with a delay. As soon as someone moves it, it wakes up. Switch off battery optimisation for the app and set location to “Always”; that helps noticeably.
Covered lens. Detection needs light. In a dark room it is impossible to tell whether someone covers the camera or the light goes out.
What VintageCam is not
The app is not a certified burglar alarm, not a smoke detector and not an emergency call system. Anyone with an insurance requirement or a hazardous situation needs tested technology for that. VintageCam is a supplement that gives you time and information, above all where you would otherwise have nothing: in the backpack, the motorhome, the garden shed, on the bike.
What is deliberately not included
The app does not hide from the owner and does not disguise itself as something else. The “discreet mode” merely keeps the permanent notification on the camera phone small and quiet, because Android requires a visible notification for camera, microphone and location services. We reject covert surveillance of other people, and it is legally risky as well (video surveillance at home).
How to get the best out of it
Combine the triggers sensibly: motion for lifting, GPS for carrying away, the charging cable for unplugging. Test everything once deliberately, switch the siren on as a trial and keep your phone up to date. And always plan for the worst when valuables are involved: an alarm system is one more net, not the only one.
